Next Bullet’s for You!

Luis Fuentes

Valle Hermoso, Mexico

Mid-June

Alejandro’s death hadn’t put an end to his operation. When I killed him, his death created a mere blip in the system of peddling tainted moonshine. I’d heard the bottles contained more crack baggies than Victor’s intestinal tract when he’d worked as a drug mule. Completing this last mission hinged on locating the guy who manufactured the rotgut. But I needed to find him before Alejandro’s goons found me.

There were rumors about the transport of the hooch and it gave me an idea for locating his plant. Trucks moved this special cocktail across the Rio Bravo at the Reynosa bridge, between the US - Mexico border. We parked our vehicle and waited at the Mexican exit. I’d spot a familiar driver or truck and follow as they drove to the clandestine location to collect their next load.

For a couple of hours, I stood like a sentinel watching vehicles pass, standing at the side of the bridge exit. But Jack chose to stay in the truck, got bored without a radio, and then restless from sitting alone. So, he started whining about being hungry. At his insistence, and since I couldn’t bear any more of his sniveling, we went for a greasy snack at a nearby burger joint aptly named Gordos.

Their menu of greasy fried foods and sweet drinks lit up Jack-Jack’s face like a kid eating cotton candy for the first time. I ordered two tacos, the least harmless items on the menu, but it didn’t take long before they sent me running to the shitter, anyway. During one of those incidents, I ran into one of Alejandro’s former dealers and we yakked for a while. It took some cajoling, but he shared a tip about a guy who’d maybe know the location of the assembly line.

I translated the directions to Jack, and we got back on the road, but he looked dazed after overdoing his food adventure at the shack. He squirmed in discomfort on occasion taking his eyes off the road. The lack of focus from my driver made me nervous. Without a word to him, I grabbed the wheel and turned it into the path of an old pickup coming from the opposite direction. Jack screamed in panic and wrestled back control of the wheel, gripping it so tight his knuckles turned white. I’d snapped him back to our task.

It took only a moment for him to recover, but his voice trembled, giving away his state of mind. “What the fuck are you doing? You could’ve killed us,” he shouted. And the instant he said it, we swerved straight into a ditch. Neither of us said a word, but he had a red face and a few new wrinkles between his eyebrows.

But the incident didn’t stop him from sneering as he maneuvered us out of the trench. We turned onto Route 12 again and found the place Alejandro’s former grunt referred to. We ended up at a dilapidated shack ravaged by time and neglect.
